Our Principal was taking time out on Sunday to help spread the lure of archery at one of the area’s local summer fairs.
Michael Williamson is treasurer of the Windwhistle Company of Archers, a traditional archery club which has been established now for a little over fourteen years. Eight members of the Club turned out at Mosterton last Sunday, delivering an opportunity for the Fair’s visitors to “have-a-go” at the real thing.
“So many people say to us that they have always wanted to try their arm at this sport, “said Michael. “As with anything else, most of us need practice but it is not difficult to become reasonably competent and by comparison with many other sports it is relatively inexpensive to kit yourself out with traditional equipment.”
The Club, which is approximately 35 strong at the moment, arranges the have-a-go events at rural fairs throughout the summer months. “We shall be at Langport’s Lowland Games at the end of July, Drimpton Village Fete on 21 August and Colyford Goose Fair on 25 September,” explains Michael. “The Drimpton organizers have persuaded us to turn up in the full medieval rig, as we always do for Colyford when we take part in the procession from village to fairground.”
Midwest Radio were covering the event at Mosterton last weekend where Michael was pictured talking to presenter, Steve Carpenter. You can see further photos on the Midwest Radio website and learn more about Windwhistle Company of Archers at the WCA website.
