Longer notice for marriages and CPs

Posted: 3rd March 2015

WeddingFrom 2 March 2015, the notice period in England and Wales for entering into a marriage or civil partnership has been extended from 15 days to 28 days. The move has been made in an effort to deter sham marriages.

All proposed marriages and civil partnerships involving a non-EU national who does not have a settled immigration status in the UK will now be referred by registrars to the Home Office.

Where the Home Office wishes to investigate the circumstances behind the proposed marriage or civil partnership, it has the power to extend the notice period from 28 to 70 days.

UK resident couples are also required to give 28 days' notice, but their applications will not be referred to the Home Office.
