Compensation for holidaymakers

Sixty-nine British people who contracted a stomach bug whilst on holiday in Spain have won more than £200,000 in compensation.
The tourists visited the Beach Club Hotel in Torremolinos, Spain, between 2007 and 2008. While there, 60 of them suffered with symptoms such as stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea.
One family found dead cockroaches in their pasta and many complained that the outside pool area was dirty and the drains smelled bad.
Some guests were treated by the hotel doctor for gastric problems whilst others were so severely ill that they had to be admitted to hospital. Eight of them are still suffering from after-effects of their illnesses, such as irritable bowel syndrome.
The holidaymakers brought a claim against the tour operators involved and, four years later, a settlement was reached shortly before the court hearing was due to commence. The tour operators agreed to pay out more than £200,000 in damages.
