When is a prize not a prize?

If you have to pay for it, it isn't a prize. That simple rule was the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union CJEU following a referral form the Court of Appeal concerning 'scratch cards' which require the 'winner' to claim their 'prize' by calling a premium-rate phone number.
In the view of the CJEU, a 'prize' must be able to be claimed without any cost whatsoever to the claimant, and offering several methods to claim the prize, one of which is free, does not overcome the restriction.
