High COurt RegistryThe High Court has ruled that a case concerning a man’s wish to be allowed to die at a time of his choosing should be heard.
Tony Nicklinson has been paralysed since he suffered a stroke in 2005. He has to communicate with others using specially adapted equipment.
He would be unable to end his own life without assistance, and wishes to obtain a ruling that any doctor who helps him to end his life at the time he chooses to do so will not face criminal charges.
The application was opposed by the Ministry of Justice on the ground that it would ‘change murder law’.
