Student Flats 2When the Coalition Government took office, it expressed the view that the system in place for competing for government contracts was actively discouraging small and medium-sized businesses, charities and social enterprises from taking part.
As part of its drive to improve efficiency and achieve more transparency across its operations, the Government’s programme included a specific commitment for central government to publish details of all new contracts worth over £10,000. To this end, a package of measures has been introduced to assist companies find information on such contracts and to make it easier to complete the tendering process.
Initially, the Government started to publish in full details of contracts worth over £25,000. It has now launched an online tool, Contracts Finder, which will enable companies to compete for this business. This will display every central government tender opportunity and includes an email alert facility to let organisations know when new opportunities occur that are relevant to the services they offer.
The aim is that 25 per cent of government business should go to small and medium-sized businesses, which count for 50 per cent of the turnover of the UK business economy, and that many more contracts should be won by charities and social enterprises.

Additional developments are planned that will add features to enhance the website and functions to further facilitate the procurement process.
